The Monsoon Resilience and Recovery Team is committed to building awareness and resilience in our local community in relation to Monsoon and other extreme weather-related events. As Mackay is located within an area known as the Monsoon Trough, we are more likely to experience heavy rain, flooding or tropical cyclones than those areas of Australia that do not lie within this region. For this reason, it is important that we as a community are prepared.
The program’s current focus is to provide education and to promote awareness of the importance of Disaster Preparedness and this is done by our team attending community meetings, organisational staff meetings, local community events and delivering an informal presentation and providing resources. During all community engagements the team importantly make time to listen to the stories of those who have been previously impacted by extreme weather-related events, as often they have learnt important lessons that can be passed on.
The team have been trained in Person-Centered Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP), which has been developed to support those more vulnerable members of our community who may have complex support needs. Our team are available to work with community groups, organisations or with individuals who may need support in developing their emergency plan. This consists of sitting down and identifying an individual’s strengths and their support needs in everyday life so that those needs can be planned for and managed in an emergency.
Please contact the Monsoon Resilience and Recovery Team if you would like any more information on this program.
